The architecture of using a three-computer technology is the result of many years of evolution and revolution within the computing platforms The LAN emerged in the early 1980s as a means of moving away from control by a single entity known as the MIS department As this evolution began, users were empowered to manipulate their own data, handle their own information, and share that information with others on a selective or exclusive basis Because of this movement, a lot of pressure was placed on the communications side of the business to provide interconnection using a cabling infrastructure to the various desktop computers and departments that would be interrelated Management saw an opportunity to produce ad hoc reporting, allow flexible data manipulation, and provide more timely information to managers and departments alike As LANs emerged, they were primarily tied to a desktop and an individual server within a department Later in its evolution, the client/server architecture started to emerge more strongly by allowing multiple departments within a single organization to fulfill their data communications and data access needs by accessing each other s databases or sharing the files they created with their customers It is this sharing that created additional appliance affiliations within the different groups The PC, as it attached to the network, enables users to store their applications and files on a single device By linking these computing systems together with a communications medium, the user can best seek the information wherever it resides within the network If a new application is needed, either a server can be adapted to fit that need or a new server can be added From a communications perspective, devices have emerged that include e-mail within departments, fax servers for transmitting information directly from a desktop to a customer, and voice recognition and response systems that enable customers to call in and literally talk to the server, as opposed to having to talk to a human Furthermore, the linkage of all of these systems through a communications medium is the glue that binds everything together The PC of old, although structured as strictly a desktop device, has changed dramatically Now, new features include the following.

chain-link spacing and subsequent uneven loading on one of the two chains, but we won t cover the dynamics and physics of this scenario This is still an acceptable method of applying redundancy for safety When one of the chains fails, you still have another to carry most of the load Double-strand roller chain is the best way to increase load capacity, and the cost of this type of chain is only about twice that of single-strand chain Most supply houses will supply the chain as a random-length loop or as long pieces of various lengths Cutting the chain may require that you punch or drill out the rivet on one part of a link You can buy a set of chain maintenance tools for in-the-field chain repairs; these would include a roller chain breaking tool, which is far easier to use than a hammer and a punch Also available are chain pin extracting tools and a unique roller chain puller that allows you to tighten the chain before inserting a master link connector For maximum chain strength, a chain can be custom ordered from the manufacturer in the exact length you need If you choose to go this route, you will not need a master link The master link is a separately purchased connector link that allows you to create a continuous loop of chain You should also buy several extra master link connectors to fasten the chain together at the length you ll want This fastener consists of a side piece of a link with two pins that fit in the roller parts of the two ends of the chain, and a figure-8 side piece to fit over the pins on the other side A clip snaps over the slotted ends of the pins, locking the master link in place Figure 6-7 shows a typical chain.

Reports are typically boring collections of numbers in rows and columns Despite their generally dull nature, reports are still in huge demand across many organizations Fortunately, reports don t have to be as dull as they have been in the past Thanks to online report viewing, reports can now be interactive, providing end users with the ability to drill down and obtain additional information, or choose values from a filter list to narrow the scope of what they see in the report Understand that when discussing reports, the terms filters and parameters are often used interchangeably, and that will be the case in this book Figure 1-3 shows a report that allows users to narrow the data using drop-down list boxes, as well as drill into more detail by expanding regions of the report SQL Server Reporting Services allows for the creation of reports against a data warehouse, regardless of whether the data are stored in a relational format or in a cube These reports can be interactive; users can choose values from a parameter list and the reports can allow for limited drill down and other analytic operations Reports can also link to other reports so that data may be examined in more detail
