ten customer This is a business decision the definition may be as simple as the customers with the greatest purchases this year to date Or, it could be as complex as the customers with the largest contributions to gross profit margin over the past four quarters, who have been customers for at least two years, and who have not exceeded 80% of their existing credit line The point is that once the business defines the criteria for the top ten customers, a formula can be created that will always calculate those top ten customers with the latest data; this allows the members of the set to change frequently, depending on the criteria and the volatility of the data The person designing the reports can then simply drag over a named set such as Top Ten Customers and the report will always show the current top ten customers Once again, Named Sets help highlight the need for someone who understands MDX well when building a business intelligence solution based on Microsoft technology Figure 6-3 represents a rather boring chart on the surface There is a single measure, Gross Profit, on the X-axis The Y-axis contains a hierarchy of product model lines, a hierarchy that goes from the All level to the Product Line level to the Model level There is also a tooltip shown in the screenshot because, when the mouse is moved over a bar, the value of that particular bar appears in a tooltip In this chart, there is one large bar, sometimes referred to as the Big Blue Bar because, while boring on the surface, it actually tells users something useful: in this example Gross Profit for all products is approximately $126 million Some users will question the time period that is covered, but in this case, hopefully it is obvious: since no time has been specified, this is for all time, as well as all customers, all employees, and so on There isn t much else that can be done with this particular chart while in Design mode, but clicking the Browse button opens a viewer that allows the developer to test how end users will be able to interact with this particular chart Opening the chart in the Browse Analytic Report viewer is, at first, not any more exciting than viewing it in Design mode Now, however, moving the mouse over the Big Blue Bar turns the mouse pointer into a hand, indicating a clickable region Clicking once on the Big Blue Bar changes the view to that shown in Figure 6-4 In Figure 6-4, it is easy to see that the Mountain Product Line is the largest contributor to Gross Profit by far (realize this is gross profit in dollars, not the gross profit margin, which is a percentage) But why did clicking on the bar go from the All level of the Product Model Lines hierarchy to the product Line level This is because, by default, clicking on a bar will drill the user down one level on whatever hierarchy is listed on the Y-axis (the Series) Note too that the browser window has Back and Forward buttons in the upper left-hand corner, so that users can easily go back to the previous view of the chart.

draw most of the current out of the battery in the given run times shown in the figure Notice the fairly steep slope for both of the SLA batteries and how both the NiCad and NiMH are almost flat The physics of each battery technology will determine the shape of these curves This curve is repeatable between the various battery manufacturers, so capacity can be predicted for various run times This is true even for the steep slope of the SLA batteries th To determine the 6-minute run-time capacity for a battery, look at the 1/10 hour (or 6-minute) run time data in Figure 5-2 The average current the battery can deliver for 6 continuous minutes will be 10 times this 6-minute run-time value In Figure 5-2, you will see that the discharge rates for the 17Ahr SLA and the 65Ahr NiMH batteries are nearly identical at approximately 6Ahr; thus, the average current these batteries can deliver during the 6 minutes is 10 times this value, or 60 amps For the 12Ahr SLA and the 44Ahr NiCad, the 6-minute run-time capacity is about 4Ahr, so these two batteries can deliver on average about 40 amps for 6 minutes

With the constant threat of viruses arriving in mail attachments and via other mechanisms, some firewall vendors also offer virus checking Because the processing load on the firewall can be enough for one machine, the virus checking function is offloaded onto another machine that also resides in the DMZ The process works like this The firewall recognizes a mail attachment on the mail message Before forwarding the mail message to the mail server, it first sends it to the virus checker that opens the attachment and scans it for known viruses It would do the same for a file forwarded to the FTP server If there is no problem, the virus checker tells the firewall that all is OK, and the message is delivered If a virus is detected, there are several options available, depending on the vendor s implementation: 1 2 3 4 5 6 Discard the message Notify the system administrator by e-mail or pager Clean the file by removing the virus and pass the message on Return the message to the sender Send e-mail to the sender Send e-mail to the recipient
