Although the current copper-based network is unattractive to unbundle the physical transmission components, fiber-based networks offer many more opportunities The local access network can be improved by telephone companies by deploying fiber in the future The central office, nodes at remote sites and the curbside pedestal can all be improved with fiber-based architectures These nodes serve as flexibility points where signals can be switched or multiplexed to the appropriate destination A small percentage of lines are served by digital loop carrier (DLC) systems that incorporate a second flexibility point into the architecture at the remote node The third flexibility point at the pedestal has been proposed for fiber-to-the-curb systems in the future The bandwidth limitations of a fiber system are not due to the intrinsic properties of the fiber, but the limitations of the switching, multiplexing, and transmission equipment connected to the fiber This opens the world up for a myriad of new service offerings when fiber makes it to the consumer s door Third parties like Qwest and Level 3 are becoming the carrier s carrier They will install the fiber to the pedestal, the door, or to the backbone and sell the capacity to the ILEC or CLEC This produces many attractive alternatives to the broadband networks for the future No longer will bandwidth be the constraining factor; the application or the computer will be the bottleneck

The power transmitting capability of a V-belt is dependent on the belt tension and the angle of wrap around the sheave The greater the belt tension, the greater the torque transmitting capability As with synchronous belts, V-belts are available only in fixed lengths To determine which size of V-belt to use, you should consult the belt specification datasheets from the belt manufacturer For combat robots, V-belts could be used for drive belts in the power transmission and for speed reduction applications But the most common use for V-belts is for driving weapons As with flat belts, using V-belts in this way will allow the belt to slip if the weapon is stalled With V-belts, more torque can be transmitted from the motor to the weapons, thus making them more effective than regular flat belts The belt slippage when the weapon has stalled may be desirable in this situation because the drive motors are protected from complete stall and possible burnout

The compact form of a power transmission is to use a gearbox between your motors and wheels Earlier, we talked about using gearmotors for robots A gearmotor consists of a gearbox mounted to an electric motor Inside the gearbox are gears, shafts, bearings, oil/grease, and a rigid case A gearbox consists of precisely designed components Within a gearbox there are various configurations of gears to obtain the speed reduction The common methods consists of spurs gears, planetary gears, helical gears, worm gears (shown in Figure 6-10), or some combination of these gears

Consequently, until fiber is deployed all the way to the customer premises, portions of the network will continue to present the same speed and throughput limitations
